HEY EVERYONE sorry I've been kind of neglecting this site lately. I've been playing games and having my hands full with two cute little sparrows I have to care for.
HOW DID YOU GET SPARROWS you ask?
Once upon a time, three little sparrow nestlings lived in a nest outside my windowsill. One day I found them starved and pretty much frozen to death. In fact, I thought they WERE dead until one gave the slightest impression of a yawn. I took them and warmed them and fed them and now they are mine. One died a few minutes after being warmed, but the remaining two are strong, healthy, loud and fluffy and they'll be able to fly in a bit. I hope to be able to wean them off human contact and release them soon.
WHY DIDN'T YOU BRING THEM TO A REHAB CENTER you ask?
These guys are house sparrows, overpopulated alien murderers who kill our native cavity-dwellers for no reason at all. Rehab centers usually won't take them.
SHOULD I DO THE SAME THING WITH A BABY BIRD I FOUND you ask?
Probably not. If it's feathered and uninjured, chances are it doesn't need your help and its parents are hanging around waiting for you to go away. If it's not feathered, see if you can find its nest. If you can, put it back in. If not (or if it seems injured), put it in a box lined with with toilet paper or paper towels, cover it loosely, and put it in a QUIET place. Call a wildlife rehab center and they can help you from there.
I don't recommend attempting to raise wild baby birds for a variety of reasons:
1.
It's illegal. Unless your baby is a house sparrow, starling, or pigeon, it is illegal to keep it. If discovered, it can be confiscated and/or euthanized.
2.
It's difficult. Many baby birds die under the care of people trying to help, usually of starvation. People tend not to know what baby birds need to eat in order to survive, and although the bird may quantitatively be well-fed, it will die of malnutrition. They may also drown: people give them water, and they aspirate it.
3.
It's time consuming. There are no weekends when you're caring for baby birds. My babies have woken me up at 4 or 5 every morning for food and beg for more VERY frequently. Now that they're feathered, they are eating less often, but before, they would need to eat every half-hour or so. That's about 32 times a day, and no, they cannot eat on their own.
4.
JESUS CHRIST THEY'RE ANNOYING. They may be cute, but they're VERY loud and demanding and obviously you can't just discard them if you happen to get sick of them. Unless you're a bastid. I like my babies very much despite how irritating they may be. Weeell... I guess that irritation's what I get for interfering with nature.
There are other reasons too but I am lazy and want to get to what the point of this journal was supposed to be..
CHEAP ART, GUYS! CHEAP ART! I need some stuff to do for the next few days when I don't have commission materials with me and/or I'm bored in skool/have free time. So help me out, both diversionwise and financially (sort of). GET IN ON THE CHEAP ART ACTION. (US residents only, sorry)
HERE IS WHAT YOU DO:
1. NOTE ME! Make sure to say you want in on the cheap art action. I'll give you my address.
2. PREPARE AN ENVELOPE! Address it to me and stamp it.. you know.
3. GET ANOTHER ENVELOPE! Put your address in the middle so I can send it back to you without screwing up your info. Not that I've ever done so, but I don't want to risk it. Stamp it if you want. I don't care.
4. PUT TWO DOLLARS IN THE SECOND ENVELOPE! That's American dollars, you sneaky bastids.
5. PUT THE SECOND ENVELOPE IN THE FIRST ONE!
6. PUT IT IN A MAILBOX!
HERE IS WHAT I WILL DO:
1. RECEIVE YOUR ENVELOPES!
2. DRAW YOU A PICTURE! You do not get a say in what you want, nor do you get to see it before it's sent to you, but I will try to make it something you like. Chances are it'll be a ballpoint sketch (see "agitated pseudocorvid" or "la renarde" for examples). It may be big or it may be small, but seriously, TWO DOLLARS! You can't go wrong with that!!! :0
3. SEND IT!
So how does that sound? Lemme know as soon as possible if you want to get some CHEAP ART. LIMITED TIME ONLY, TELL YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY. BEFORE THIS OFFER DISAPPEARS FOR A WHILE.
