In my recent journal I asked for suggestions on which non-canine and non-avian creature to draw and Chanticlair suggested some sort of herp, so I chose one of my favourite amphibians, the vacant looking AXOLOTL. It is a Mexican salamander that some people eat. (eeewww) Most of the ones I have seen are leucistic, with dark eyes, white skin, and pink gill fringes, though they also come in albino (yellowish with pink or yellow eyes and red gill fringes, like albino reptiles) and mottled black/tan/grey, which is their wild form.
This is my MENTAL IMAGE of an axolotl as it was done during school and I had no opportunity to find a ref... a google search revealed that their feet are in fact NOT webbed and their gill fringes are more of a constant length rather than crazy all over the place. WHOOPS. But yeah, axolotls look like they have some sort of mental deficiency going on: [link] |
